Andrew Schoen is an active performer, chamber musician, and educator based in San Antonio, TX.
Since moving to Texas in 2016, Andrew has maintained a private studio of middle school, high school, and adult saxophone students. He enjoys working with a wide range of students of various ages and experience levels. His lessons are catered to the individual goals of the student and are generally centered around saxophone repertoire, jazz conception/improvisation, and ensemble-playing. Andrew’s students have won prizes and recognitions in competitions including the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the Coltman Chamber Music Competition, and the MTNA solo competitions. Student’s of Andrew’s studio have regularly place in the TMEA region, area and state honor ensembles and have been accepted into undergraduate and graduate music programs across the country. Previously, Andrew served on the faculties of Clemson University and Lubbock Christian University.
Andrew has been a proud member of the Aruna Quartet since 2017. The group has garnered success in the competitive realm including Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition (2019), Second Prize at the Coltman Chamber Music Competition (2019), and Third Prize at the MTNA Chamber Winds National Finals Competition (2019). Aruna has now dedicated itself to presenting intimate concerts, creating engaging educational programs, and exploring new ways to collaborate with composers, storytellers and other musicians.
Andrew holds degrees from Texas Tech University (DMA and MM in performance) where he studied saxophone with David Dees and jazz improvisation with Stephen Jones. Prior to moving Texas, Andrew earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (BM in music education) where he studied classical and jazz saxophone with Will Campbell. Andrew has also benefited from additional study at the Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute where he received intensive study over two summers.
